Hong Kong was a Chinese territory before the arrival of British. It was a small fishing community and was the most favorable place for the travelers and the pirates in the South China Sea. It was used by the British as the naval base during the Opium Wars with China.
Hong Kong region consists of two pieces of land, in 1860 the Kowloon peninsula was surrendered to the British under the convention of Peking and other constituencies in 1890 on lease for 99 years. Since then the British controlled the Hong Kong till World War II. The social and economical life of the Hong Kong was disturbed on Christmas Day in 1941 and the Japanese took over the Hong Kong then for four years. In 1945, British reclaimed Hong Kong foiling Japanese plan to use Hong Kong as a platform for further assault against East Asia. |
